Citizenship applications

The Ministry of Immigration and Integration processes personal data in connection with the processing of citizenship applications.

Purpose and legal basis

The purpose of this processing of personal data is to be able to make a decision in relation to the citizenship applications.

The legal basis for the processing is the Nationality Act and Circular Letter no. 9535 of 2 July 2018 on naturalisation.

Categories of data

It is necessary to process personal data in order to process an application for citizenship. This may include general as well as sensitive personal data. Depending on the circumstances, it may also be necessary to process personal data about others than the applicant for citizenship.

Recipients or categories of recipients

Depending on the circumstances, we will disclose data about the applicant. This may be to the following authorities:

  • The Danish Parliament, Folketinget (this will generally be in connection with presentations of applications for citizenship for the Danish Parliament's Committee on Naturalisation, in connection with the tabling of naturalisation bills, or in connection with a response to a question from a parliament committee)
  • The immigration authorities (for example in connection with the collection of information about an applicant's basis of residence, etc.)
  • Other ministries and subordinate agencies (for example in connection with consultation of other authorities)
  • Police and the prosecution service (for example in connection with consultation as to an applicant's potential criminal convictions)
  • Local authorities (for example in connection with consultation as to an applicant's income situation)
  • Danish embassies and missions abroad (for example in connection with consultation as to nationality matters)

Storage of your data

The Ministry of Immigration and Integration will store your personal data for as long as it is necessary for us to be able to perform our tasks in relation to the establishment, exercise or defence of legal claims for citizenship.

In a case concerning citizenship, information may be stored for the purpose of subsequent cases under the Ministry of Immigration and Integration. This means that the information may be included in future cases, such as cases concerning deprivation of Danish citizenship and your children's potential cases concerning citizenship. In practice, this means that the Ministry of Immigration and Integration will store your data in a so-called life-cycle period – i.e. your entire life.

If it is possible to erase the information earlier, erasure will be considered. Similarly, the access to the information may be limited.

Finally, it should be noted that the information will have to be handed over to the Danish National Archives after 30 years at the latest (see section 13 of the Archives Act).
